Three apprentices from ÀNI Art Academies recently participated in a unique artist retreat at Erik’s Ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana. Surrounded by expansive landscapes and mountain views, the retreat offered a focused environment for artistic exploration, reflection, and community engagement.
Representing ÀNI Art Academies Dominicana and ÀNI Art Academies Waichulis, Patricia Alonzo Diaz, Angel Young, and Steven Griffin were selected based on their dedication to the program and the strength of their work. Each artist engaged with the setting in a personal way, allowing the environment to influence both their process and perspective.
The Montana landscape became a key source of inspiration. From observing animals at the ranch to exploring the surrounding terrain, the experience informed both subject matter and approach. Some artists focused on direct studies, while others explored new ways of working through looser or more intuitive methods.
The retreat also offered an opportunity to connect with the mission of Erik’s Ranch, a nonprofit organization supporting young adults on the autism spectrum. Through interactions and shared experiences, the apprentices gained insight into a community built on independence, respect, and meaningful engagement.
With a balance of independent work and group activities, the retreat allowed each artist to approach the experience in a way that supported their individual goals. All three apprentices described the retreat as highly impactful, contributing to both their artistic development and personal growth.
Experiences like this highlight the importance of stepping outside the studio. By engaging with new environments and communities, artists are able to expand their perspective and deepen their practice. This collaboration is ongoing, with plans already in place for another artist retreat in 2027.
